In Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, there are lots of slums, most of them are in the city center, located around the rich’s landfill, next to their villa. The Deep Sea slum, in the middle of Nairobi, is lacking any kind of essential services needed to live a dignified life, and 6.000 people are living there. The Deep Sea slum is an agglomerated of shacks in metal sheets and papers that have nothing in common with a house. A big informal settlement that is becoming the expression of urban poverty.
There is not access to water, health services, electricity, toiletry and all others kind of fundamental needs.
In the slum, where life is characterized by the absence of food, the landfill becomes the source of life. Because of the absence of clean water and toilets, the slum’s road become the sewers. Moreover, overcrowding denies the inhabitants a fundamental life-space, so they always must look for a new shelter.
The “Esodo” project
Franciscan Friars want to buy a land to start some activities managed by Deep Sea’s inhabitants, such as the production and selling of clothes, greenhouse care, cheese production, space for bringing up children. The project wants to help poor people of the slums to redeem themselves.
